Molecular Electron Microscopy Core

Overview of Services

The Molecular Electron Microscopy Core (MEMC) is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to high-resolution electron cryomicroscopy and electron cryotomography. It houses four transmission electron microscopes, a 120kV Spirit, a 200kV F20/Tietz XF416, a 200kV Glacios/Falcon4, and a 300kV Titan Krios/K3 BioQuantum. These microscopes are available to researchers either for direct use, or aided by MEMC personnel, to collect data aimed at high-resolution structural biology projects.

By examining frozen, unstained samples in thse high resolution transmission electron microscopes and taking images from different angles, researchers get structural data down to the molecular level, without having to crystallize proteins. This data complements the expertise in protein X-ray crystallography and NMR in  the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics

The goal of the UVA SOM Shared Research Resource Cores is to provide researchers with access to state-of-the-art instrumentation, technology and scientific expertise for the communal advantage of our institution's investigators, so that they can effectively carry out the research mission of the University. The MEMC supports this by providing access to the best microscopes available.

The MEMC facility is located in the Life Sciences Annex on the Fontaine Research Campus.
